Pediatrics and myopia control
The American Optometric Association recommends children should get their first eye exam at the age of 6 months old.
Pediatricians will usually perform a vision screening during their general checkups but an optometrist will take a more thorough look into the health of your child's eyes. Vision screenings will miss 1/3 of eye or vision disorders in children so it's always good to get a comprehensive exam through a licensed optometrist. Comprehensive eye exams are important to detect problems early to ensure that babies have the opportunity to develop vision successfully.
Infantsee Program
Children can receive a free eye exam before their first birthday regardless of insurance coverage or income! Click here for more info on the program.
Myopia Control
Myopia control is the use of treatments aimed at slowing the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children. Treatments are used to help relax the eyes and alleviate eye strain that can worsen myopia. Below are some treatments that can be used for myopia control.
Atropine eye drops - use of topical eyedrops that alleviate eye strain by helping the muscles in the eyes relax.
Bifocal glasses - glasses can be made to accommodate for distance vision and near vision using lenses with a distinct line to differentiate far and near prescriptions
Myopia control contact lenses - these contact lenses have different focusing power around the contacts.
Orthokeratology (Ortho-k) - rigid contact lenses that are fitted and worn overnight to temporarily change the shape of the cornea during sleep.
